Best Copper Tea Kettle

Move over coffee, tea is taking over. However, with the growing popularity of coffee also comes with the issue, making them. We forgot how to make them. Thankfully, all you really need is a Tea Kettle. Perhaps the best kettle is the traditional Copper Tea Kettle. The Best Copper Tea Kettle are those made of solid copper, but these day most are only copper plated. To fully understand why solid copper is better, you have to understand why copper is good.

Why a Copper Tea Kettle is the Best?

Out of all the metal, Copper is one of the best heat conductor. This means that it can easily transfer heat from the stove to the pot. If you compare the thermal conductivity of cast iron to copper, it is well over 5x of cast iron.

The advantage of this is that you can boil water faster. You also have more control of the temperature. When you shut off the heat, it will stop boiling. Where as the cast iron will keep going.

Is Copper Safe?

One fear that a lot of people have is safety. Copper can be dangerous if it has a green patina. Ingesting that can make you sick. To combat this, manufacturer put lining on it. Some copper tea kettle uses either a tin or nickle lining. This prevents the copper from forming a green patina. It also act as a protective barrier from the copper.

What if copper is showing? Small traces of copper is fine. In the past, water was stored in copper jugs. Even my espresso machine has a bare copper reservoir. The main thing you have to look out for is the green patina.

Do Copper Rust?

No, copper does not rust. Instead of rust, it patina. It darkens and eventually it will turn green. The same green that the statue of liberty is made of. Did you know its made of copper?

Different Type of Copper Tea Kettle

Despite what the name says, most Copper Tea Kettle arent actually Copper. Some manufacturer still use solid copper to make their kettle. But those are not the norm. Copper is expensive so most manufacturer try to avoid it. Instead, what they will do is plate it with copper. You have no advantage of copper, just the look of it. Whats worse is that overtime, the copper can rub off.

When looking for a copper kettle, look for something that says solid copper. Do not trust the manufacturer when they say its a copper kettle.

Some copper kettle are hammered. There is a reason for that. The hammering of copper adds strength and make it more rigid. However, copper kettle that are not hammered are still plenty strong. There is a iron ring in a lot of them to make them rigid. For the most part, its done for looks.

Cleaning

After a while, the copper will start to change color and look dirty. Its normal and you shouldnt worry about it. You can do things like use a copper polish. But really, theres nothing you can do about it. Just leave it as is and accept it for what it is.

The interior will eventually start to build a white film. That white film is known as lime scale. If left alone, it will destroy the inner lining. You can remove it by soaking it in water and white vinegar. After 24 hours, just clean it with soap and water.

If you need to use a sponge, get one with a chopstick. Use the chopstick to move it around.

Asahi is one of the few manufacturer that actually makes copper kettle. It’s interior is lined so that you wont actually ingest any copper. Plus the hammering gives it a beautiful sheen to it. If you are look for a copper kettle, this is the way to go. The only better option is the model made by Mauviel. But those are hard to find in the states.

Old Dutch Hammered Copper Tea Kettle with Brass Spout and Wooden Handle, 2 qt (Best Alternative)

If you just want another option, Old Dutch is a good option. It has neat wooden handle, this makes it look good and keeps it cool. Models with a metal handle can get hot and burn your hand. The problem with the Old Dutch model is that its more expensive and I personally dont think the quality is as good as asahi.

CopperBull Hammered Thickest Copper Tea Pot Kettle Stovetop Teapot,28 Oz (Best Buy)

Copper Bull is a affordable alternative compared to the other models. The handle is off to the side instead of the top. I personally dont find it as attractive, but thats subjective. One thing that you should take care of is the handle. Its made of plastic, if you leave it on while boiling, it can melt. So take it off while boiling.
