Old Fisherman Canned Roasted EEL (同榮紅燒鰻魚) Review
Old Fisherman Roasted Eel (同榮紅燒鰻魚) is a very popular canned food in Taiwan. You can compare it with the canned sardines of America. While tuna is commonly eaten at lunch, this can of roasted eel can be eaten at anytime. One common paring that is usually associated with it is a simple bowl of rice. I personally buy it because I like how the box is designed. The colors and style reminds me of the 80’s. This review will talk about its taste, nutrition and uses.
Unagi vs Canned Roasted Eel
While both the Unagi and the Canned Eel are both roasted, they are very different in terms of texture. For the canned version, the texture is much more brittle and much more tough. The unagi on the other hand still have the same texture of eel, soft and slightly slimy. While some people might think they are interchangeable, it is not. However, both of them can be eaten with rice at Breakfast, lunch or dinner.
What to do with Canned Eel
While Unagi is commonly used with sushi, I do not recommend doing that with the canned version. However, I do recommend rolling the price into a onigiri. While it is almost the same concept, the texture and ratio is very different. You can also pack it ahead of time and use it as a picnic or hiking trip. If that is too much of a hassle, just pack a bowl of rice and the canned eel. But the seaweed really does make a different. Old Fisherman Canned Roasted EEL is pretty versatile.
What does Canned Eel Taste Like?
It has a very sweet and savory taste. The texture is that of something that has been dried and tough, but still maintains a satisfying chew. Usually the eel is drenched in the manufacturer own sauce which usually consists of cinnamon, pepper, various sea food, capsicum and sugar. It is so good that people usually drenched the sauce in the rice.
Old Fisherman Canned Roasted EEL Nutrition and Health
There is nothing that stands out about the nutrition of Old Fisherman Canned EEL. Not really unhealthy, in fact, you get a whopping 20 g of protein from just one canned. If anything, I would say that this is a perfect compliment as a side dish. Here is a quick run down of its nutritional fact.
Total Fat:12g
Cholesterol: 70 mg
Sodium: 520 mg
Total Carb 10g
Protein 20g
Considering how bad other canned food are, I will probably eat two of this just to balance it out.
Old Fisherman Canned EEL Ingredients
The ingredients are pretty natural, nothing too sciency on the list.
Conger Eel, water, sugar, capsicum, soy sauce, bbq powder, salt, Soybean Oil, Licorice Powder, herbs powder, cinnamon powder, Pepper Powder, monosodium glutamate.
Where to Buy Old Fisherman Canned Roasted EEL
You can buy this at any Asian Supermarket. It is quite popular so finding should not be difficult. There are many different version of this, one of the cheaper and more common version in America, is the knock off version. While both of them taste the same, I personally buy the Old Fisherman version because of the box design. If you do not have a asian supermarket close by, you can find it at Amazon but you are forced to buy it in huge packs.
Thoughts
This is a great canned food. There is a reason why its so popular in Asia and the Asian community. Its delicious, healthy and very versatile. If you have a chance, I highly recommend trying it, you might be surprised to find that it replaces your regular canned sardines.
