History of Nonshim

Nongshim was founded in 1965 under the name Lotte Industrial Company. Although most think that they are a Japanese Company, they are in fact Korean. They are known for their variety of dried goods. One of the most popular product is the shrimp crackers and cup noodles. Since their early days, their success had allowed them to expand rapidly. Opening multiple factories throughout Korea. Given their success of the Nongshim Ramyun, they soon changed their name to Nongshim. They built on this by expanding the amount of flavors available. In 1985, they were the official supplier of instant noodle for the Olympics. They continued to win countless awards through the company history. However, they are not that popular in America. Most american only know of the shin ramyun ramen. And even that is limited.

Why is Shin Ramen So Good?

To me, they are one of the best tasting noodle on the market. The spicy beef broth gives the soup a delectable umami flavor. Inside the packets, there is a dried vegetable packet that adds texture and flavor. Some of the vegetables are green onion, carrots and shitake mushroom. Together, they provide a perfect balance of flavor. The green onion, is dried and thin to give just a hint of onion flavor. The shitake adds just the right meaty chew. The texture of the noodle is elastic and gives off a satisfying bite. It is a umami packed noodle that pleasures the flavor pallet.

If you are adventurous, there are many ways that you can expand the flavor base of this noodle. For example, adding a egg is a commonly used choice. Crack an egg in and let it parboil to give it that runny texture. Or you can even add some cabbage to add a different texture. The beef broth will flavor the cabbage and make it taste amazing.

Shin Ramyun Cup vs Packet

You should get the packet hands down. From a financial standpoint, you are simply getting a lot more for your money. Roughly 1 oz more. The package one and the cup are both are 1 dollar each. It is not worth it to have the cup. The only situation where you should get it is if you need it portable. The noodles also feel slightly thinner. Certainty not up to the quality of the packet version. Dehydrated noodles are also slightly smaller as well.

Nongshim Ramen Noodle Health and Nutrition

Its instant noodle, its not healthy. You wont get cancer from it, but eating it everyday its not going to be good for you. Shin Ramen is calorie dense. One packet is 510 calroies with 8 grams of saturated fat. That accounts to a daily value of 40% just for saturated fat. Sodium is also through the roof. Per packet, you will get 1970 mg of salt or 86% of your daily value. The other values are not really significant. What is good is that it does have a decent amount of protein (9g). With that being said, if you look at all the other instant noodle, its inline with the other noodles. But really, is this going to stop you from eating it?

Where to Buy?

You can buy these noodles in any Asian Supermarket. They tend to be a lot cheaper than the online retailer. However, every once in a while, you can find them for sale on Amazon. If your costco has a large asian population, they might carry it as well. As of now, its not popular enough to be found in the major supermarket.

Nongshim Ramen Noodle Thoughts

If you have not tried this noodle, try it. Its an amazing noodle. There is a reason why its one of the most popular noodle in Asia. While its not the healthiest thing for you, neither is any other instant noodle. It does cost a lot more than the maruchan noodle, but so is the quality.
