Chinese Medicine in general, gets a bad rep. If you have ever drank those herbal medicine, you will know that it is one of the most vial medicine out there. However, in the long history of Chinese Medicine, there exist one that taste like candy, Nin Jiom Pei Pa Koa. It is a thick viscous syrup that is suppose to soothe the throat when you are sick. It has a soothing menthol effect and is sweet to the palate. If you did not know about its history, you would think its candy. In fact, I ate it as kid even when i wasn’t sick, its that good!


Origins

In 1880, Ye Tian Shi (葉天士) a qing dynasty physician created a recipe to treat the sick mother of Yang Chin. Yang Chin, then started to produce this medicine for the public. The company was kept in the family for almost two hundred years, until they sold it in 1946. While the company is currently headquartered in Hong Kong, they also operate in Taiwan. Since then, it has spread throughout asia, europe and the united state.

Coughing, singing and Sore Throat

The main benefit of this syrup is its soothing effect. It is best used when you have a sore throat. Singers often use this to coat their throat much like honey. For the best effect, it is recommended to drink it straight. Although, it is often used in a drink. I personally like to let it sit on the throat.

Pei Pa Koa Fruit and Ingredients

The main ingredients is the Si Chuna Fritiallary bulb. However, the product is derived from theLoquat leaf. It is a fruit that is commonly eaten in China. For the most part, this syrup is an all natural herbal medicine. For the full ingredient list, you can find it at wikipedia.

FDA Approved

Interesting enough, it stated on the box that it is not FDA approved. It also states that it is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. While I personally dont think it does much for an actual fever. It is still good for soothing a sore throat. After all, I ate it like candy.

How to Drink

As stated before, I personally like to drink it by itself. If you throat feels hoarse or sore, this is the best thing to drink.

To get an idea of dosage, this is their recommended serving size.
Adult Aged over 12: 1 tablespoon 3 times a day.
Children Aged 7-12: 2/3 tablespoon 3 times a day.
Children aged 4-6: 1/3 tablespoon 3 times a day.

You can find Nin Jiom Pei Pa Koa in any Asian Supermarket. It has a very distinctive red and white box. Locate the picture of the old grandma and the son. If you do not have an asian supermarket near you, it is also available at Amazon. The Price is a little More Expensive than your asian supermarket though.

Thoughts

This is a great alternative to your traditional Cough Medicine. Kids and adults will love the sweet taste. Although it wont help with actual fevers, it is great for sore throat. Singers can actually use this as a honey substitute. I highly recommend giving Nin Jiom Pei Pa Koa a Try!
