History of Emeril Lagasse

Emeril Lagasse is a celebrity chef who stars in many cooking show. He is perhaps most known for the word BAM that he shouts randomly.

Emeril Lagasse graduated from Culinary School in 1978 and quickly became a executive chef at Dunfey Hyannis Resort. In the 1990 he opened his own restaurant and it won restaurant of the year from Esquire magazine. From there, he started to appear on cooking show. One of his first was on the Great Chef. Overall his endorsement, restaurants and media presences earns him an estimated 150 million dollar in revenue.

Emeril Lagasse Cookware Set Design

This section will discuss the various design and construction of Emeril Lagasse Cookware. We will go over handle, shape and overall performance.

Handle

The handle on Emeril Lagasse nonstick cookware is made of a thick piece of stainless steel. While it does not have a heat choke, it will stay cool on the stove top. This all metal design also means that it can have a higher oven safe temperature. The hard anodized set can withstand temperature of up to 450 degree fahrenheight.

In terms of ergonomic, it feels substantial and hefty, giving it a more high class feel. The rounded shape means that its comfortable to hold and wont cause fatigue with use. However, the rounded design also means that it will rotate in your hand if its greasy. A slight texture would have improve its grip.

Other than that, his name and signature E is affixed throughout the handle. Overall a pretty attractive and well built handle.

Shape

Overall, the shape of the cookware is pretty good. The skillets are designed beautifully. It has low flaring sides that promotes evaporation. It also have rolled lip so that it can pour liquid with ease.

The sauce pots are more wide than tall. This lets you sear more food in a single batch reducing overall cooking time.

The cookware set comes in a total of 12 piece. This set should let you cook just about anything a home cook would need to. While I would have preferred a dutch oven, the stockpot can be used as a substitute just fine. Just be aware that the lids count as inidividual pieces. Manufacturer likes to do this to make it sound like you are getting more of a bargain.

Lid

The lids are made of glass. They have a oven safe temperature of 350 degree fahrenheit. 100 degree lower than the pot. Be sure to remove if you plan on using it in the oven. They are also vulnerable to thermal shock. If the lid is hot and you rinse it in cold water, it can shatter.

An all metal lid would have been a better design. While you cant look in, they wont shatter like glass would. Besides, wont steam start to form, you cant see in either way. Kinda makes it pointless.

Hard Anodized Nonstick

The nonstick coating is hard anodized. In a traditional teflon pan, the coating is painted on then baked. For hard anodized cookware, they use a electrochemical process to affix the coating. This makes the aluminum oxide layer harder making it more durable. These type of nonstick coating tend to last longer and cost more as well. Emeril Lagasse cookware also uses a three layer nosntick, one of the best in the industry. In my experience, these type of cookware also perform a little better.

However, a nonstick coating is only as good as its durability. Expect all nonstick coating to only last 1-2 years. There are some things you can do to prolong its life though. For starter, never use a metal utensil or nylon scrubber. Little Cuts and tears will degrade it rapidly.

I would also caution against overheating the pan. At temperature of 500 degree and above the coating tends to degrade rapidly. At even higher temperature it can release fumes causing flu like symptom. This is known as Teflon Flu.

Emeril Lagasse Cookware Set Thoughts

Overall, I am very impressed by the build quality of Emeril Lagasse cookware set. The handles are good and so is the shape. They use a durable nonstick coating and its hard anodized. For the price, it is much better than other celebrity chef cookware set.
