History of Calphalon
Calphalon was started by Ronald Kasperzak. He initially purchased a Commercial Metal a small metal spinning company. His goal was to expand the line of cookware to the food industry. His company was one of the first to apply Hard Anodizing to nonstick cookware. In 1976, the company started to released their products to the public. From there, their company started gaining popularity in America. Today, they are known as one of the biggest nonstick cookware manufacturer.
Calphalon Contemporary Nonstick Omelette Pan Design
This section will discuss the various component of Calphalon Contemporary Nonstick Omelette Pan. We will go through handle, construction and general design.
Handle
Calphalon Contemporary uses an all metal handle. It is made of stainless steel with a heat choke at its base. These metal design gives the pan a higher oven safe temperature. Usually handle with a plastic or silicone handle has a upper oven safe temperature of 350-400 degree Fahrenheit. However, these handle will get hot in the oven. So it is always best practice to wear gloves.
The handle is angled slightly towards the user giving it better balancing and making it feel lighter. Its round shape and taper fit the contour of your hand. Usually, these type of handles get slippery if your hands are greasy. However, thanks to the texture finish, you can maintain a firm grip on it. Overall, these handle are very well designed and comfortable.
Shape
In a traditional frying pan, low flaring sides are preferred to help in evaporation. In a omelette pan, the sidewalls are usually taller. They are there to help keep in the eggs when you toss it. For this reason, there is no rolled lip. With that said, you can still use the pan as a skillet. The only downside is that more steam will get trapped. Try to space food out so you wont accidentally steam your food. Thankfully they designed the pan to have a wide flat cooking surface.
Hard Anodizing
Hard Anodizing is a process where they use a electrochemical process to affix the nonstick coating. This hardens the aluminum oxide layer making it more durable. In a traditional teflon pan, it is sand plasted then painted on. This usually results in a less durable nonstick coating. The prices usually reflects this as welll. Calphalon claims that theirs is a triple nonstick coating. These type of coating usually cost more than a traditional version. However, basic care should still be used when using nonstick.
Prolonging Life of Nonstick
There are two things that you can do to extend the life of your pan.
1) Never use metal utensils. Little tears and nicks will destroy the nonstick coating. Avoid dish washer and nylon scrubbers as well.
2) Do not over heat the pan. At 500 degree fahrenheight, the nonstick coating will start to deteriorate rapidly. At temperature of 572 degree you might experience flu like symptoms called the teflon flu. Birds have been known to die from this. However, humans are unlikely to die from exposure. You can temper the heat of the pan by always adding oil to a cold pan. If you see smoke from it, its time to lower the heat.
Fat and Health
A lot of manufacturer likes to tout the reduce oil use. However, oil is absolutely needed when cooking. It improves flavor and make you full longer. The whole fear of fat started because of the sugar industry. They paid Harvard scientist to release a false article stating the dangers of fat. To compensate for this, food manufacturer started to increase the content of sugar. As a result, we now have the diabetes epidemic. While fat do have more calories, we gain more from it than lose.
Lifetime Warranty
Calphalon Contemporary has a lifetime warranty. However, my experience with any nonstick warranty is that they will deny for any misuse. For that reason, I recommend that you just buy another pan. Expect any and all nonstick pan to last one or two year before replacing. It is cheaper to just replace than pay for shipping.
Calphalon Contemporary Nonstick Omelette Pan Thoughts
Overall, Calphalon Contemporary Nonstick Omelette Pan is a pretty well designed omelette pan. The handle is great, the nonstick coating is durable and its shaped perfectly for eggs. However, the main issue is that its not as versatile as a traditional skillet. But if your only goal is to make omelette, this is the pan for you.
