Non Stick Coating

The nonstick coating is a ceramic based nonstick with a infusion of copper. Whether it is infused with copper is not that important, but rather the performance of it. The general idea is that with that amount of copper, there is little to no performance that you can get from it. Aluminum should be the primary metal that is used in Bulbhead Red Copper Cookware. For that reason, the performance is Aluminum based. Which isn’t bad at all, aluminum has a good conductor of heat. It’s just a little misleading to consumers.

Ceramic Better?

Ceramic seems to have come out of nowhere and took over the market. They marketed it as more healthy and safe and it worked. Almost every other question online is in regards to health and safety. While they do not have PFOA and PFTE, I would not rate them as more health then teflon based cookware. Teflon is a chemically inert product, so ingesting it shouldn’t really cause you any issue. The only problem is the gas that might be produced from it at extremely high temperature.

What I personally focuses on is durability. Which unfortunately is the biggest issue with Ceramic nonstick cookware. America Test Kitchen has conducted test and found that Ceramic cookware simply do not last. They loose the nonstick performance quickly and tear after a couple of use. While they are PFOA and PFTE free, they do not last longer than teflon. I guess this is a trade off that you can judge for yourself. The one thing that I impressed with is the oven safe temperature. For traditional nonstick cookware, the oven safe temperature usually top off at 400 degree Fahrenheit. Bulbhead Red Copper Cookware maxes out at 500 degree Fahrenheit, Quite an amazing feat.

Regarding Health and Fats

Non stick cookware often market themselves as healthier because you use less oil. As a cook, one of the goals you should focus on is flavor. Fat is one of the most important gateway to flavor. Lean food while less fattening, simply lack the depth of flavor. Another thing to keep in mind is that fat keeps you full longer. So while it is more calorie dense, you will eat less in the long run.

A history on the fat scare. In the past, fat was used in a lot of food. However, the sugar company decided to scare off consumers from fat and promote sugar. They hired scientist to release articles stating the danger of fat. They labeled fat as a hazard to your health and downplay the effect of sugar. It worked with great success. To help combat the lack of flavor of in packaged food, they compensate it with an increase dose of sugar. Thanks to that, we have the diabetes epidemic we have now. So when you see advertiser as less oil less fat, please reconsider. If you want to learn more about this, you can read NPR’s Article.

Bulbhead Red Copper Cookware Design

This section will discuss the various aspect of Bulbhead Red Copper Cookware design. We will talk about the handle, construction and overall design.

Handle

Bulbhead Red Copper Cookware uses an all metal design. It looks very similar to those that are used by cuisinart. The base has a Heat Choke to prevent the transfer of heat. The center divots inward causing two raised ridge. This raise ridge will latch onto your hand preventing it from slipping. However, the issue is that it causes a lot of discomfort and pain. This is especially true with prolong use. Overall, the construction is cheap and it feels cheap. For this price point, it is pretty much expected. What is good about the handle is the oven safe temperature. It is one of the reason why you can stick it in a 500 degree oven. For silicone or plastic handle, those usually max at 400 degree.

Shape

The shape of Bulbhead Red Copper Cookware is surprisingly good. The skillet has low sloping sides with a rolled lip. This promotes evaporation of liquid and it makes flipping food easy. Frying pan with tall sidewall makes reaching under with a spatula difficult. Their design resembles those of All Clad, which is one of the best skillet you can buy.

The sauce pots are more wide than narrow. This lets you cook food in single batches. Narrow pots crowd food making it steam. As a result, this prolong cooking time. It is also easier to maneuver and stir food with a wider base. Overall, the shape and design of their cookware is pretty good.

Bulbhead Red Copper 10 Pieces?

The piece that you get in their 10 piece cookware is pretty extensive. You should be able to cook anything you would need at home. You get two skillets 2 sauce pot and a dutch oven with a strainer. Just be aware that the lids count as a single piece. Marketer often do this so you think you have a better value.

Lid

The lids are made out of glass. I generally avoid glass lid because they can shatter. While its nice to look in, but once it steams, its pointless. The fog and moisture makes it difficult to see. I much rather an all metal lid so that you dont have to worry about it. They did add a metal ring around it to improve its durability. There is also a vent hole to let out steam. This stops the lid from popping.

Bulbhead Red Copper Cookware Set Thoughts

Overall, this is a pretty good bargain. For the price you pay, you get quite a bit of cookware. Just be aware of some of the misleading marketing tactics. Aside from the handle, the biggest issue is the ceramic coating. They simply dont last as long as teflon. There are numerous reports on amazon stating that it sticks. You can prolong its life by not using metal utensils though. Either way, its a good value, just dont expect it to last more than 1-2 years, like most nonstick cookware.
